New Research and Ideas

  • Cruelty to animals is linked to domestic violence:

- A study by Frank Ascione of Utah University finds a strong association between those who batter and those who hurt or kill pets. In another study, not yet published, he found that victims of child abuse are more likely to harm animals.

- Frank Ascione's Safe Havens for Pets: Guidelines for Programs Sheltering Pets for Women Who Are Battered is available free to any domestic violence or animal welfare agency. Send a self-addressed, self-adhesive mailing label to Frank Ascione, Department of Psychology, Utah State University, 2810 Old Main Hill, Logan, Utah 84322-2810. Others can buy a copy by sending a $25.00 check made out to USU Department of Psychology to the same address.

  • New responses when domestic violence and child maltreatment occur together.

- The National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges convened an Advisory Committee to draft recommendations developed by Susan Schecter and Jeffrey Edleson. Those recommendations can be found in their publication Effective Intervention in Domestic Violence and Child Maltreatment Cases: Guidelines for Policy and Practice. A copy may be acquired free by writing to: National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges
